Brukswhisky

Mackmyra Brukswhisky, NAS, 41,4 %

Today I am testing and tasting the Mackmyra Brukswhisky. This product was launched back in 2010, and is still part of the Mackmyra core range, together with Mackmyra Svensk Rök and Mackmyra Svensk Ek. I really do not know anything about the maturation for this whisky, but over at Master of Malt they have these facts to share: "Mackmyra’s core expression is a light Swedish whisky matured primarily in first fill bourbon barrels but also includes whisky aged in Sherry and Swedish oak casks too as well as some smokier malt, which all adds to the complexity." The Mackmyra Brukswhisky is not available to buy in Norway, but you can of course buy it in Sweden at SEK 399 (1043001). You can also buy it online from the UK at around GBP 33.

Nose: (19/25): Rather soft on the nose. A bit oaky at first. Some peat – but hardly noticeable. Spices; pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. The oakiness turns into more of a nuttiness after a few minutes. Given even more time it does take on a more fruity character; oranges mainly. More vanilla with time as well.

Taste: (18/25): Light and soft. The mouthfeel is too thin for me. It just sort of slips away. Caramel and water with a small dollop of honey mixed in. Vanilla and wet wooden planks.

Finish: (18/25): Soft caramel mixed with a pinch of pepper. Relatively short finish, but the spice adds a welcome dimension. Quite oaky and bordering on metallic.

Balance: (18/25): This whisky fell a bit short for me. I would have wanted to turn up the volume a few more notches in most areas. It feels too toned down, but maybe that is on purpose? It does say on the product sheet that it is ‘created to be enjoyed at any occasion’. That sounds very much like a whisky where the aim is to create something light, that does not push any buttons and does not really challenge in any way.

Score: (73/100)
