The whisky of the day is an upcoming release from Swedish distillery Mackmyra. The Mackmyra Ten Years will be released on May 5, 2017. A total of 20 000 bottles are being produced, of which 12 000 are made for the Swedish market, and the rest are meant for export.
The Mackmyra Ten years is made using a mix of different cask types; 200 litre fresh American oak casks, 200 litre sherry seasoned (Oloroso) American oak casks, 200 litre 1st fill ex-bourbon casks, and 500 litre refill ex-bourbon casks.
Nose: Fresh and fruity, with a solid base of warm and soft oaky notes. There’s top notes of vanilla and coconut oil. Over time it just solidifies and gives us more of the same. I also find strawberries, and creamy caramel.
Taste: Medium body and soft mouthfeel. Spices and fruits go hand in hand. The spices are a mix of exotic and woody. The fruits are mainly apples and pears. In addition there is vanilla, white pepper and a mild nuttiness.
Finish: Medium long finish. Takes on a slightly buttery and green character towards the end. I detect a slight bitterness and hints of coal.
Comments: A robust, solid and spicy dram. Well done! I much prefer this over the recent twelve year old
