This is release number 22 in the Moment Series by Swedish distillery Mackmyra. The Mackmyra Moment Ledin was released for sale on 2017-06-01, in a limited run of 2300 bottles.
This whisky was initially matured for four years in 1st fill bourbon casks, and then ‘finished’ (more like a double maturation) for five years in French oak casks that had previously held Sauternes wine.
The name for the whisky comes from Swedish singer and songwriter Tomas Ledin. Well, he is apparently a Mackmyra fan as well! He selected the casks together with Mackmyra Master Blender Angela D’Orazio.
Nose: Richer on the nose than your average Mackmyra. Sweet with notes of vanilla and sweet white wine. Ripe apples and pears. Cinnamon and coconut.
Taste: Medium body. Oak and pepper, ginger and caramel, vanilla and coconut. Add slightly bitter orange peel after a couple of sips.
Finish: Medium long finish. Continues much as it started. The spices mellow out, and the caramel turns more towards toffee and floral honey.
Comments: This is a dram that grows on you. It comes across as young-ish, but quite mature and well-balanced at the same time. The finish makes you reach for the glass again and again. I quess I’m a sucker for whisky matured in Sauternes casks. Well done!
