I still have a long backlog of old Mackmyra releases to work through. Mackmyra released a total of fifteen whiskies in their Moment Series, and so far I have only reviewed three. A lot more to come then.
The Mackmyra Moment Jord (Earth) has received a finish in French Oak ex-Bordeaux wine casks. The whisky does not have an age statement, but it was bottled in May 2011. The total outturn was 1150 bottles, and this was release number four in the Moment Series.
Nose: (22/25): Dark chocolate and dark red berries. There is certainly an element of something earthy here. Vanilla, fudge, and marshmallows. Quite rich and full on the nose. I really like this mellow sweetness. Given more time I detect soft oaky notes, more vanilla, lemon soda and cold ashes. Given even more time and the earthy notes are back in full. Lovely and complex.
Taste: (22/25): Chocolate, pepper, hints of chili, and dark red berries.
Finish: (22/25): Warm and medium to long finish. Very nice, rich chocolate finish. It is not too sweet – it hits just the right notes. Hints of cocoa and coffee right at the end.
Balance: (22/25): A very rich and complex whisky that lives up to its name. This is one of the very best Mackmyra whiskies I have tried, make that one of the best Swedish whiskies.
