So, I have reached the 18th release in the Moment Series from Swedish distillery Mackmyra. The Mackmyra Moment Fenix was released 2016-02-19, in a limited run of 990 bottles.
Mackmyra says:
“The whisky is mainly matured on fruity and flowery casks that previously stored birch sap wine, but also in sweet and spicy casks saturated with Pedro Ximénez. To add some final character we’ve also used some our famous 30 litre casks.”
The Mackmyra Moment Fenix is currently sold out, but you might find a bottle online in the region of GBP 120.
Nose: Sweet, light, floral notes mixed quite delicately and elegantly with soft notes of orchard fruits. The first impression is quite positive, I must say. Develops positively; floral honey and warmer notes emerge.
Taste: Medium body and soft mouthfeel. The delicate, sweet and fruity character carries over to the palate. A very nice balance is struck immediately. Honey, ginger, menthol, mint and black pepper.
Finish: Medium long finish. The honey remains front and center – it turns less sweet with time and takes on more of a herbal and menthol-like style.
Comments: This is a whisky that makes you smile, and nod in appreciation of fine, young whiskies. I am very allergic to birch, but I can attest to there being nothing to fear for my fellow allergics here.
