Blomstertid

2017-07-04 by Thomas Øhrbom (Whisky Saga)

Mackmyra Blomstertid (Season), NAS, 46,1 %

The whisky of the day is a product from Swedish distillery Mackmyra and their product range the Seasons Series. The Mackmyra Blomstertid (“flower season” or “flower time”) has been matured in several different types of casks: Ex-bourbon casks saturated with cherry wine American oak casks (new and 1st fill) Oloroso wine casks Pedro Ximenez casks The Mackmyra Blomstertid was launched on 2016-05-06, and appears to be largely sold out now. The official description from Mackmyra: “Mackmyra Blomstertid is a single malt whisky in limited edition with berry and spicy notes. Around a third of the casks used in Blomstertid has previously aged cherry wine, which in turn gives the whisky notes of cherry both in character and color.”

Nose: Fresh and light on first approach. There are a lot of berry notes here, and I do believe I can pick up some cherry. Hard to distinguish the individual notes though – usually a telltale sign that we are dealing with a relatively young whisky. But we already knew that, so let’s not get distracted; age is just a number. I find powered sugar, light citrus notes and a soft hint of spices.

Taste: A fine mix of oak, spices, fruits and berries. Again a bit hard to pick this apart and name specifics, but I’ll do my best anyways. So, there’s white pepper and ginger. Lime and green apples. Rowanberry and cherries.

Finish: Medium to short finish. Continues much as it started. the oakiness turns into something more like pine wood or juniper. It turns a bit watery towards the end. Sweetness with a touch of citrus lingers.

Comments: Hmm, I don’t know, is it confusing with all these strange versions of Mackmyra? This is a quite decent dram, but it is strange.

Score: (78/100)
