We are going Swedish again today. Mackmyra Svensk Rök (Swedish Smoke) is the first regular expression from Mackmyra that is peated. Mackmyra Svensk Rök contains about 70 % peated whisky and 30 % unpeated (“elegant”). The name reflects the fact that this whisky has a unique Swedish smoke character, as Mackmyra use smoke from smoldering juniper branches when drying some of their malt.
The peated whisky has been matured in a mix of 110 and 30 liter casks that were filled in 2008-2010, and a few from 2004-2005 (‘röksvans’). The unpeated whisky was distilled in 2006-2009.
This whisky does not hold an age statement, but the age of the component whiskies are in the range of 4-9 years. It was launched in September 2013.
You can purchase the Mackmyra Svensk Rök in Norway at NOK 420 (item number 1841202), and in Sweden at SEK 462 (item number 408). This whisky is sold in 50 cl bottles, not 70 cl. Strange – and interesting – that it is currently slightly cheaper to buy this Swedish whisky in Norway than in Sweden.
Nose: (23/25): Rich, round and pleasant. Mild peat smoke – which actually does have a faint juniper note, some licorice, vanilla and citrus. I really like this nose.
Taste: (21/25): Cool and fruity. Chocolate and mild licorice caramel is added after a sip or two.
Finish: (20/25): Cool and mild, medium peated, dark chocolate, a bit short. A hint of juniper here as well, Maybe?
Balance: (21/25): A very nice, youngish and peaty dram.
