Guldrök Small batch

2017-11-28 by Thomas Øhrbom (Whisky Saga)

Mackmyra Guldrök Small Batch, NAS, 51.7 %

This is a special edition of Mackmyra, released on 2016-09-28 for the 60th anniversary of La Maison du Whisky, France. The Mackmyra Guldrök Small Batch (Guldrök = golden smoke) was matured in a “200-litre ex-bourbon cask with a smoky twist”. The total outturn was 300 bottles. A curiosity, pointed out by Mackmyra Collection, is that the front label of the bottle and the carton box both correctly state the ABV at 51.7 %, but the back label on the bottle gives the ABV at 52.5 %. You can buy the Mackmyra Guldrök Small Batch directly from La Maison du Whisky at €161.

Nose: Icing sugar, ice coffee and smoky, dark chocolate. Really rich and pleasant.

Taste: Full-bodied and rich. Chocolate and various types of pepper. Added to that there is ashes, nutmeg and cinnamon. It has a ‘grainy’ feel – not as in ‘grain whisky’ but as in ‘chewy’. The peatiness is dry and somewhat green in character.

Finish: Medium long finish. Drier now, and the sweetness is more subdued. Ashes and oak, caramel and coconut.

Comments: A richer than normal Mackmyra. Peaty chocolate and oak work well together here.

Score: (86/100)
